Regulation (EC) No. 261 of 11 February 2004 renewed the Community rules on denied boarding, cancellation and delays in air transport, substantially strengthening the protection of travelling passengers both in terms of financial compensation and in terms of assistance by the carrier.
The text of the law is also flanked by the most significant rulings issued by the European Court of Justice, which, on several occasions, by way of preliminary rulings, has been asked to interpret the most controversial provisions of the regulation, and has offered a series of solutions that have made it possible to fill some significant gaps.
