Gradual Protection Service for electricity: what do you need to know?

 To facilitate the transition from the regulated market to the free market, the Regulatory Authority for Energy, Networks and Environment (ARERA) has set up the so-called Gradual Protection Service (STG). 


Gradual Protection Service, what changes for companies

As of 1 January 2021, companies that did not choose a supplier in the free market automatically switched to the Gradual Protection Service (STG).

The following is specifics are automatically included in the service

small businesses ( with between 10 and 50 employees and/or an annual turnover of between €2 and €10 million) that only own low voltage connected withdrawal points

micro-enterprises (fewer than 10 employees and no more than €2 million in turnover) with at least one withdrawal point with a contractually committed power of more than 15 kW.

Until 30th June 2021, the Gradual Protection Service was provided by Servizio Elettrico Nazionale S.p.A., an Enel Group company.

From 1st July 2021 and for the subsequent three years, the Gradual Protection Service is provided by suppliers selected through a tender. A single supplier can also serve several regions.


The contractual conditions applied are the same as those of the PLACET Offers, defined by ARERA .

Gradual Protection Service: what communications should you expect?


Each provider has an obligation to communicate details of the service to customers in the assigned territory, and in particular

- website and contacts 

- the motive and date of service activation 

- the conditions of supply

- the modalities for withdrawing from the contract

- references to the Offers Portal and the Energy and Environment Consumer Desk.
